As a creative design and digital agency based in Scotland, we are often asked to deliver a lot of search engine optimisation (SEO) work for our clients. We spoke to our Simplicity team and came up with our top tips for beginners when it comes to some quick and easy SEO wins for 2021.
1 – Register with Google Search Console & Google Analytics
2 – Do your keyword research
When you first look at SEO, you should always start by researching and understanding your keywords. These words are the search terms and phrases that people are most likely going to use in order to find your business. For example, a plumber based in Edinburgh would want to use keywords such as Plumbers in Edinburgh, or Edinburgh Plumbers.
Once you have brainstormed your keywords or used a Keyword planning tool (such as Google Keyword Planner), it is then crucial to cross reference with competitors or market leaders in your industry.
3 – Optimise your page titles
So now you have your keywords narrowed down, you’ll want to start thinking about the main titles of your pages. These page titles appear in search results and as a result, we want them to be clear, easy to read, and include your keywords – but not at the expense of readability or clickability. In an ideal world, to improve your click-through-rate, you want the keyword at the start of the page title.
4 – Optimise your page content
Once your page titles and meta descriptions are optimised, you will then want to turn your focus to optimisation of your page content. Reviewing the keyword research and by analysing Google search console and analytics, we should be in a good place to start focusing and narrowing down the following key SEO indicators on our page content: Header tags – H1, H2, H3 etc, paragraph content on the page, relevant images that have correct image name, alt tags and descriptions placed behind them.
Lastly, for your page optimisation you will want to include some internal and external links. So, if your content is talking specifically about one aspect of your business or a relevant service you provide, then link the text back to that page.
Hopefully, this guide will aid in improving your SEO performance, but this is very much a quick overview and beginner’s guide. If you want a more in-depth analysis or free SEO audit of your website then please drop us an email.
